SUMMARY:Two Way Street Coffee House - Presents John Derado
DESCRIPTION:WELCOME TO THE TWO WAY STREET COFFEE HOUSE FRIDAY NIGHT SERIES!\n\n\n\n\nTwo Way Street Coffee House is Chicagoland’s most beloved folk and acoustic music venue\, presenting weekly concerts and community events for over 50 years!  The show starts at 8pm (CT) and the doors open at 7:30pm. (Suggested donation $10).  We will also host this concert virtually.  You may access the livestream on www.twowaystreet.org\, on our Facebook page or on our YouTube channel. \n\n\n\n\nOn Friday\, October 23\, 2026 Two Way Street Coffee House Friday Night Concert Series presents John Derado.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFEATURED ARTIST\n\n\n\n\nJohn Derado brings the kind of deep musical roots that feel right at home in a listening room. Grounded in pre-war blues and shaped by decades of performing\, traveling\, and sharing music with audiences across North America\, John pairs fingerstyle guitar and bottleneck slide with the storytelling spirit of Americana. His years as both a performer and co-founder of Valparaiso’s Front Porch Music give him a rare perspective on the community that grows around live acoustic music—something Two Way Street understands very well. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nARTIST BIO\n\n\n\n\n\nOriginally from East of Gary\, John Derado plays fingerstyle guitar and bottleneck slide. His roots are firmly planted in traditional pre-war blues with a strong inclination towards the Americana singer/songwriter. He has played throughout the contiguous 48 states\, Canada and Mexico. In 1991 along with Paul Schriener he took time out to open Front Porch Music in Valparaiso\, a retail and performance venue that has hosted such acts as John Hartford\, Paul Geremia\, Donovan\, James Lee Stanley and Jim Post to name but a few. John has opened for many internationally touring acts including Little Feat\, Duke Tumatoe\, Rodney Crowell\, Leon Redbone and Corky Siegel. After performing a few numbers on his own\, Mr. Siegel called John back on stage to play out the rest of the evening with him\, according to John\, “One of the highlights of my career indeed.” Another highlight was being selected by Pinetop Perkins himself to open a star studded 88th birthday party for him in his then hometown of LaPorte\, Indiana.

But sometimes it takes a while to connect. That’s what happens to the little girl in this book—when she first sees her faraway family\, they feel like strangers. To make matters worse\, the power goes out at bedtime\, and that means no more night-light. Then a flashlight beam appears—it’s her grandmother\, who invites her into a lively game of shadow play. And soon the two of them are having a grand adventure\, and the girl’s faraway family starts feeling more like friends. \nAward-winning author Padma Venkatraman’s picture book debut shows the joy of connecting through imaginative play\, and Nicole Wong’s evocative illustrations bring the story to brilliant life. \nAbout the Author:\nPadma Venkatraman (PadmaVenkatraman.com) was born in India and became an American after living in five countries and working as an oceanographer. She wrote the novels Safe Harbor\, Born Behind Bars (South Asia Book Award\, Junior Library Guild Selection)\, The Bridge Home (Walter Award\, Golden Kite Award\, Global Read Aloud Selection)\, A Time to Dance (IBBY Selection\, ALA Notable)\, Island’s End (CCBC Choice\, Kirkus Best Book for Teens)\, and Climbing the Stairs (ALA Amelia Bloomer List\, Notable Social Studies Trade Book for Young People). Faraway Family is her first picture book. She lives in Rhode Island.

SUMMARY:Anderson's Bookshop - Banned Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Join us in Downers Grove for our monthly Banned Book Club! Our next meeting will be held on Thursday\, October 22nd at 6:00 pm\, and we will be discussing All American Boys. This will be a free event\, but we highly encourage the purchase of the monthly book from our store. Please note that the author will not be present at this event. \n\nMore about All American Boys:  \nA 2016 Coretta Scott King Author Honor book\, and recipient of the Walter Dean Myers Award for Outstanding Children’s Literature. \nIn this New York Times bestselling novel\, two teens—one black\, one white—grapple with the repercussions of a single violent act that leaves their school\, their community\, and\, ultimately\, the country bitterly divided by racial tension. \nA bag of chips. That’s all sixteen-year-old Rashad is looking for at the corner bodega. What he finds instead is a fist-happy cop\, Paul Galluzzo\, who mistakes Rashad for a shoplifter\, mistakes Rashad’s pleadings that he’s stolen nothing for belligerence\, mistakes Rashad’s resistance to leave the bodega as resisting arrest\, mistakes Rashad’s every flinch at every punch the cop throws as further resistance and refusal to STAY STILL as ordered. But how can you stay still when someone is pounding your face into the concrete pavement? \nThere were witnesses: Quinn Collins—a varsity basketball player and Rashad’s classmate who has been raised by Paul since his own father died in Afghanistan—and a video camera. Soon the beating is all over the news and Paul is getting threatened with accusations of prejudice and racial brutality. Quinn refuses to believe that the man who has basically been his savior could possibly be guilty. But then Rashad is absent. And absent again. And again. And the basketball team—half of whom are Rashad’s best friends—start to take sides. As does the school. And the town. Simmering tensions threaten to explode as Rashad and Quinn are forced to face decisions and consequences they had never considered before. \nWritten in tandem by two award-winning authors\, this four-starred reviewed tour de force shares the alternating perspectives of Rashad and Quinn as the complications from that single violent moment\, the type taken directly from today’s headlines\, unfold and reverberate to highlight an unwelcome truth. \nAbout the Author:  \nJason Reynolds is a #1 New York Times bestselling author\, recipient of the MacArthur Genius Grant\, a Newbery Award Honoree\, a Printz Award Honoree\, a two-time National Book Award finalist\, a Kirkus Award winner\, a UK Carnegie Medal winner\, a two-time Walter Dean Myers Award winner\, an NAACP Image Award Winner\, an Odyssey Award Winner and two-time honoree\, and the recipient of multiple Coretta Scott King honors\, a Coretta Scott King Author Award\, and the Margaret A. Edwards Award. He was also the 2020–2022 National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature. His many books include All American Boys (cowritten with Brendan Kiely); When I Was the Greatest; The Boy in the Black Suit; Stamped; As Brave as You; For Every One; the Track series (Ghost\, Patina\, Sunny\, Lu\, and Coach); Look Both Ways; Stuntboy\, in the Meantime; Stuntboy\, In-Between Time; Miles Morales Suspended; Ain’t Burned All the Bright (recipient of the Caldecott Honor) and My Name Is Jason. Mine Too. (both cowritten with Jason Griffin); Twenty-Four Seconds from Now…; and Long Way Down\, which received a Newbery Honor\, a Printz Honor\, and a Coretta Scott King Honor. His debut picture book\, There Was a Party for Langston\, won a Caldecott Honor and a Coretta Scott King Illustrator Honor. He lives in Washington\, DC. SUMMARY:Anderson's Bookshop - Educator Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our Educator Book Club! Our next in-person meeting will be held on Tuesday\, October 20th at 4:30 pm\, and we will be discussing Such Great Heights by Rajani LaRocca. This will be a free event\, but we highly encourage the purchase of the monthly book from our store.  Please note that the author will not be present at this event. \nMore about Such Great Heights:   \nSiya Kumar is done with liars. \nPart of the reason Siya joins her school’s mock trial team is to honor the memory of her mother\, a lawyer who was killed in a car accident when Siya was just ten years old. Her mom always told her that the truth is like a flame that burns away lies. \nWhen Raj Raghavan\, varsity soccer star and mock trial co-captain\, seems interested in Siya\, it feels too good to be true. Everything is golden until an overnight team bonding session\, when Siya accidentally gets locked in a room with another guy until dawn. Even though Siya swears nothing happened\, she doesn’t feel like Raj believes her. \nAt the same time\, the details of the mock trial case are suspiciously similar to the circumstances of her mom’s death—which leads Siya to wonder if it was really just a car accident that took her mother’s life. \nFrom award-winning author Rajani LaRocca comes a contemporary retelling of the Ramayana that asks whether seeking the truth is always the right thing to do. Sometimes\, is the past better left behind? \nAbout the Author:\nRajani LaRocca was born in India\, raised in Kentucky\, and now lives in Massachusetts\, where she practices medicine and writes award-winning books for young readers\, including the Newbery Honor–winning novel in verse\, Red\, White\, and Whole. She’s always been an omnivorous reader\, and now she is an omnivorous writer of novels and picture books\, fiction and nonfiction\, in prose and poetry. A graduate of Harvard College and Harvard Medical School\, she lives outside Boston with her family. Visit her at rajanilarocca.com.
