SUMMARY:Two Way Street Coffee House - Heritage Matinee Series
DESCRIPTION:Heritage Matinee Series\nMark Dvorak • Ashley & Simpson • James Curley • Tom Orland\nSunday\, October 4\, 2026 • 3:00 PM\nDoors open at 2:30 PM\nSpend a Sunday afternoon with us at the Two Way Street Coffee House for another installment of our Heritage Matinee Series\, bringing together four distinctive voices from the Chicago-area folk and songwriting community. \nSeries regulars Mark Dvorak and Ashley & Simpson will be joined by James Curley and Tom Orland for an afternoon of songs\, stories\, harmonies\, humor\, and the musical traditions that keep folk music alive and evolving. \nThe Heritage Matinee Series is also a benefit for Two Way Street Coffee House. 100% of free-will donations support our programming and operations\, helping us continue bringing live folk and acoustic music to our community. \nMark Dvorak\nMark Dvorak is a modern-day troubadour whose music draws deeply from the American folk tradition. A performer\, songwriter\, teacher\, guitarist\, and banjo player\, Mark has been called “a folk singer’s folk singer” and praised for his encyclopedic knowledge of traditional song. \nHis performances move easily between traditional folk\, country blues\, selections from the Great American Songbook\, audience sing-alongs\, and his own carefully crafted originals. Whether on a festival stage or in an intimate listening room\, Mark has a gift for making an audience feel like part of the music. \nAshley & Simpson\nJennifer Ashley and Joel Simpson bring rich vocal harmonies\, traditional songs\, and thoughtful arrangements to their distinctive folk sound. Drawing on classical backgrounds while incorporating elements of jazz\, popular music\, and contemporary influences\, the duo approaches traditional material with both respect for its roots and a willingness to make it their own. \nTheir album Off To Here Land features an all-traditional song list reimagined through the duo’s signature harmonies and arrangements. \nJames Curley\nThe Singular Songwriter \nJames Curley has spent more than 50 years as a fan\, performer\, songwriter\, and instrumentalist in the folk and roots music community\, primarily in Chicago. As a solo artist\, he has opened for performers including Ellis Paul\, Dan Navarro\, Happy Traum\, and Patty Larkin\, while also fronting bands including Radio Fade\, Earnest & Troubled\, and The James Curley Band. \nHis three recordings\, released between 2001 and 2012\, produced several award-winning songs and continue to receive international radio airplay. A member of Folk Alliance since 2003 and a member of the FARM Board of Directors since 2024\, James returns to recording this fall with his first new album in 14 years. \nTom Orland\nAward-winning songwriter and Emmy-winning filmmaker Tom Orland brings quick wit\, an original point of view\, and an authentic performance style to the Heritage Matinee stage. \nTom has performed at venues including Nashville’s Bluebird Cafe\, Victory Gardens Theater\, Davenport’s Piano Bar & Cabaret\, and the Chicago Cultural Center. A longtime supporter of the songwriting community\, he co-founded the Songwriters Circle at the Old Town School of Folk Music and produced and hosted the songwriter showcase North by Southport at Schuba’s. \nFollowing a series of sold-out Chicago cabaret performances\, Tom is returning to his folk roots—and making his Heritage Matinee debut at Two Way Street. \nJoin Us In Person or Online\nCan’t make it to the coffee house? Watch the concert live online through the Two Way Street website\, Facebook page\, or YouTube channel. \nWhether you join us in the room or from home\, your donation helps support the music\, artists\, and programming of the Two Way Street Coffee House.

Reluctantly. The brooding famous singer-songwriter is on the cusp of composing his sophomore album . . . if only he could find the notes. But after gaining custody of his two-year-old daughter\, the only music he’s writing is about shapes and counting to ten. \nEnter Beverly\, who lives her life in the background producing children’s television and laughter. Except joy is hard to find when her nonprofit loses funding. She sinks all of her savings to revive the children’s show by herself\, but when her variety show appearance collides with Griffin’s\, their banter and chemistry is caught on live television. \nSuddenly\, Griffin is singing a new tune. He needs a muse\, and Beverly needs all the help she can get. With his secret daughter in tow\, they hide out in her cozy mountain hometown\, attempting to script\, compose\, and revive television magic. Their dynamic shouldn’t work. He’s all harsh tattoos and rough hands while she’s bright colors and gentle touches. Once their three months of work are done\, they’ll return to their separate worlds. But what happens when it seems the true magic might be found in each other? \nAbout the Author: \nUSA Today bestselling author Julie Olivia writes cozy love stories filled with humor\, spice\, and friendships that feel like a warm hug. She is a roller coaster fan\, avid romance reader\, and rainy day enthusiast. Julie lives in Atlanta\, Georgia with her husband and their very opinionated pets.

(Suggested donation $10).  We will also host this concert virtually.  You may access the livestream on www.twowaystreet.org\, on our Facebook page or on our YouTube channel. \n\n\n\n\nOn Friday\, October 9\, 2026 Two Way Street Coffee House Friday Night Concert Series presents Jon Shain.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFEATURED ARTIST\n\n\n\n\nJon Shain doesn’t simply play the blues—his music reflects decades spent learning\, exploring\, and carrying its traditions forward. A masterful acoustic guitarist and thoughtful songwriter\, Jon combines Piedmont blues with bluegrass\, swing\, ragtime\, and folk\, creating music rooted in history but unmistakably his own. Add compelling stories\, remarkable musicianship\, and a genuine connection to the American roots tradition\, and you have exactly the kind of performance that comes alive in an intimate listening room like Two Way Street. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nARTIST BIO\n\n\n\n\n\nHailing from Durham\, NC\, Jon Shain is a veteran singer-songwriter who’s been turning heads for years with his words\, his fiery acoustic guitar work\, and his evolved musical style – combining improvised piedmont blues with bluegrass\, swing\, and ragtime. Jon has released nine solo albums to date\, along with two albums with duo partner FJ Ventre\, a Jon Shain Trio live album\, and one album of co-writes with Joe Newberry. Shain’s newest album\, Restless Soul Syndrome\, recorded at Good Luck Studio this past year\, was released April 9\, 2024. Shain is also the author of the music books Gettin’ Handy With the Blues – a Tribute to the Legacy of W.C. Handy and Jon Shain’s Fingerstyle Guitar Method\, both published by Mel Bay Publications. In 2019\, Shain won the International Blues Challenge in Memphis\, TN in the solo/duo category. \nJon grew up in Haverhill\, Massachusetts\, a Merrimack River mill-town that had already seen its better days by the time he was a child in the 1970s. His family’s business was a small textile dyeing company\, and he worked in the factory during the summers throughout his teens. At the same time\, Shain began to discover his love of American roots music and songwriting\, specifically drawn to the narratives about regular people and themes of social justice. \nShain headed south to North Carolina in 1986\, to study American History at Duke University and to continue his musical journey\, as well. In addition to studying with jazz professor Paul Jeffrey\, he also had the good fortune to learn the piedmont blues tradition firsthand by playing in Big Boy Henry’s backing band. It was at this time that Shain also got to meet and play with John Dee Holeman and a number of the great older NC blues players. Shain’s classes in school were heavily concentrated in southern history\, English\, and world religions. That mixture of the academic environment and the real-world blues music is what has most informed his musical direction. \nShain cut his touring teeth from 1989-1998 founding the Chapel Hill\, NC folk-rock group\, Flyin’ Mice and their spin-off group\, WAKE. The band performed with acts such as David Grisman\, Tony Rice Unit\, Hot Tuna\, and the Dixie Dregs\, released four CDs\, and played clubs\, schools\, and festivals up and down the East Coast\, building a legion of fans. \nAfter the band’s breakup\, Shain went solo\, returning to his roots by touring in the folk and blues circuit. Shain has also become a sought after guitar teacher and studio producer. In 2021\, he produced Donna Herula’s blues radio chart-topping album\, Bang at the Door. \nOver the last several years\, Shain has headlined listening rooms both as a solo and with duo partner FJ Ventre throughout the US and he’s done two solo tours in Europe. He has opened shows for John Hiatt\, Keb’ Mo’\, Little Feat\, and many other roots legends. When Shain is not recording\, producing other artists\, or performing\, he stays busy giving private instruction in guitar\, and teaching group workshops in songwriting and blues guitar.
