SUMMARY:Tivoli Theatre - After Hours Film Society Presents American Doctor
DESCRIPTION:CAST & CREW\nA Documentary Directed by Poh Si Teng\nFeaturing Thaer Ahmad\, Mark Perlmutter\, Feroze Sidhwa\nNot Rated | 91 mins.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nReviewed by Clint Worthington | RoberEbert.com \nIn the opening minutes of “American Doctor\,” filmmaker Poh Si Teng sits with Dr. Mark Perlmutter\, a Jewish-American surgeon (one of three medical professionals this film will track)\, over photos of mutilated children obliterated and terrorized by Israeli weapons fire amid the War on Gaza. Teng\, who has produced video docs for the New York Times in the past (this is her feature debut)\, suggests she may pixelate or blur the devastating gore in the photos. To preserve their dignity\, she says. Fire fills Perlmutter’s eyes as he protests. “Israel took away their dignity. You’re not dignifying them by not showing that.” \n“You pixelate this\, that’s journalistic malpractice.” \nIt’s a lesson that she seems to have taken to heart\, as the ensuing ninety minutes of “American Doctor” refuse to flinch from the atrocities. It’s an infuriating\, unflinching look at the heartbreaking genocide occurring in Palestine\, and the medical and moral responsibility that healthcare workers feel to stave off so much mass death. More than a portrait of boots-on-the-ground bravery\, it’s a testament to the ideological righteousness of figures brave enough to see the violence happening and do something about it\, political opposition be damned. \nCentered on the work happening in Khan Younis’s Nasser Hospital (a building that the closing minutes will show us was blown up by Israeli missiles) during a brief ceasefire in March of 2025\, “American Doctor” homes in on the work and lives of three American doctors-turned-activists: The aforementioned Dr. Perlmutter\, Zoroastrian physician Dr. Feroze Sidhwa\, and Muslim surgeon Dr. Thaer Ahmad from Chicago. These are three figures who come from distinct backgrounds\, geographical and racial and religious\, but who share one distinct goal: To help save lives. \nPerlmutter and Sidhwa manage to successfully ship out to Gaza to serve their shifts at Nasser; Ahmad\, for cagey reasons relating to Israel’s revocation of his travel approval the night before his flight\, has to stay behind in Jordan. Nonetheless\, through their eyes we see them fight for Palestinian lives on two different stages—the surgical theater and the court of public opinion. While scrubbed in\, their fight is simple: Save the life in front of you\, typically a battered or bloodied child whose body has been brutalized by Israeli bombs. These moments feel immediate and unflinching\, but there’s a moral simplicity that makes the virtue of their work most clear. There\, they bond and laugh with their Palestinian nurses and medical professionals\, as well as other international doctors coming to do the simple work of helping where aid is needed. \nThe thornier\, more infuriating\, and undeniably more frustrating stretches come when our subjects\, Sidhwa and Perlmutter in particular\, wrestle with the information war unfolding around them\, their stint in Gaza\, and the war itself. We see them bristle at CNN interviews that ask them to answer for IDF propaganda lines like secret tunnels under Gazan hospitals (which\, they protest\, do not exist; the only footage anyone has ever shown is CGI recreations\, emptily asserted as proof) and conference calls where pro-Israel voices cry out that “Judaism is Zionism.” Sidhwa is the more measured of the two\, using facts as surgically as he would a scalpel. Perlmutter\, recognizing his white Jewishness affords him a privilege and protection his compatriots lack\, is far more blunt. “Do you think there’s benefit in spanking the media like I did?” he asks Sidhwa at one point. (Ahmad\, being Palestinian himself\, is restricted to appearances at Palestinian conferences and reading out death threats on his social media; he has the most silenced voice of all of them.) \nTeng’s approach is simple and observational\, but occasionally teeters toward the didactic in ways that overstate the already compelling footage on display. The use of music here especially grates; there’s no need to lacquer sad-sounding strings over shots of bombed-out Gazan cities\, or the exhumed former mass grave sites from previous air strikes. For much of the film\, the cries of Gazan children\, or the impassioned pleas of our doctors\, sing its message clearly enough. \nIn two months\, it will have been three years since the War in Gaza started\, with no hope of a true ceasefire in sight. In keeping with our crisis fatigue\, it’s easy to see how people have moved on\, or let their eyes glaze over\, to the war crimes still happening in that region. “American Doctor” is a potent reminder that\, no\, children are still being bombed\, and a population is being ethnically cleansed\, and it’s long past time for the violence to end. And if it won’t end\, then at least the bravest of us can go in and try to stop the bleeding. \n\n\n\nDISCUSSION FOLLOWS EVERY FILM!\n\n$7.00 Members | $11.00 Non-Members\nTIVOLI THEATRE\n5021 Highland Avenue  |  Downers Grove\, IL\n630-968-0219 |  classiccinemas.com\nWe apologize—Movie Pass cannot be used for AHFS programs

She sleeps with her riding boots on\, takes lessons at the local barn\, and reads True Grit for life advice. There’s just one thing missing— a horse of her own. \nEnter the Extreme Mustang Makeover contest\, a chance to receive and tame a newly-captured mustang for the summer. Signing up will guarantee Nash one hundred days with a horse; and if she wins\, she can use the prize money to bring him home for good. It’s the miracle Nash has been waiting for. \nBut Nash’s attention is divided when her cousin Benny arrives to stay for the summer. While Nash and Benny were once like sisters\, the six years since Nash moved away have driven a wedge between them. Benny is everything Nash isn’t: gentle and well-behaved\, and Deaf like Nash’s parents are. Sometimes she wonders if they’d rather have a daughter like that than a headstrong cowboy CODA like Nash. \nA brave girl and a horse no one believes can be tamed: it’s a tale as old as time\, brought to sizzling new life through Nash’s one-of-a-kind voice. Amy Alznauer weaves cowboy bravado\, growing pains\, and Deaf culture gleaned from her husband’s family into a debut middle grade novel that will lasso you tight by the heart. \nAbout the Author:\nAmy Alznauer is the author of several picture book biographies\, including The Boy Who Dreamed of Infinity: A Tale of the Genius Ramanujan\, Flying Paintings: the Zhou Brothers\, and The Five Sides of Marjorie Rice: How to Discover a Shape. Her writing has won the Annie Dillard Award for Creative Nonfiction\, the Christopher Award\, and the SCBWI-Illinois Laura Crawford Memorial Mentorship\, and her essays and poetry have appeared in collections and literary journals including The Bellingham Review\, Creative Nonfiction and River Teeth. She lives in Chicago with her husband and children.

SUMMARY:Two Way Street Coffee House - Presents Robinlee Garber
DESCRIPTION:WELCOME TO THE TWO WAY STREET COFFEE HOUSE FRIDAY NIGHT SERIES!\n\n\n\n\nTwo Way Street Coffee House is Chicagoland’s most beloved folk and acoustic music venue\, presenting weekly concerts and community events for over 50 years!  The show starts at 8pm (CT) and the doors open at 7:30pm. (Suggested donation $10).  We will also host this concert virtually.  You may access the livestream on www.twowaystreet.org\, on our Facebook page or on our YouTube channel. \n\n\n\n\nOn Friday\, October 16\, 2026 Two Way Street Coffee House Friday Night Concert Series presents Robinlee Garber.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFEATURED ARTIST\n\n\n\n\nFor Robinlee Garber\, a great song doesn’t need to belong to a particular genre or era—it simply needs to connect. With a crystalline alto voice and a repertoire she describes as “folk with a dash of torch\,” Robinlee moves comfortably among original songs\, folk\, jazz standards\, rock\, and contemporary music\, always keeping heart and storytelling at the center. Her belief in music’s ability to build bridges between people makes her especially at home in the intimate\, community-centered atmosphere of Two Way Street. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nARTIST BIO\n\n\n\n\n\nFolk with a dash of torch \nPhilly born and bred but a proud Chicagoan these days\, Robinlee Garber brings a crystalline alto voice with gently burnished edges and an outsider’s point-of-view to the original and time-treasured songs she sings\, focusing on a repertoire that harkens to the past without being a novelty act\, and is relatable without pandering. Her love of music infuses all her performances\, from sophisticated showcases to inclusive open mics\, exposing everyone to a lovingly curated and wide-ranging songbook of folk\, jazz standards\, rock and contemporary music where the voice is front and center. \nRobinlee grew up idolizing singer-songwriters and performers of Laurel Canyon’s heyday\, like Joni Mitchell\, Jackson Browne and Carole King but was also deeply influenced by the music of her parents: Cole Porter\, Frank Sinatra and Nat King Cole. Heart is at the center of the music she loves as she believes a great song has universal appeal no matter the language. From her earliest musical memory of sitting in her mother’s teal Chevy station wagon and noticing how perfectly Johnny Nash’s “I Can See Clearly Now” synched up to the windshield wipers to watching “The Sound of Music” on stage as a child and wanting so much to be on stage performing\, the transformative power of song has been stitched through Robinlee’s whole life. As someone with chronic health issues that often left her feeling isolated\, music was also an especially potent antidote to loneliness. \nA multi-disciplinary artist herself\, Robinlee’s “day job” is helping seniors navigating the aging process as a Registered and Board Certified Art Therapist and Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor\, helping people to plug into creative expression\, a throughline that that has brought so much joy and healing into her own life. On any given night\, though\, you can find Robinlee singing songs of love and heartbreak\, isolation and connection\, forging intimacy and bridges between music lovers who are navigating the slings and arrows of life. Robinlee believes that music is a powerful way to build bonds in our increasingly disconnected lives. \nFeatured on WDCB’s Folk Festival with Lilli Kuzma\, Robinlee acted as the music director of Culture Cafe for the wildly popular Chicago VeganMania festival for eight years and has been running a well-attended open mic in Chicago. She has also performed across the US\, Canada\, Sweden and Finland. Check out her schedule for upcoming shows and please get in touch if you’d like to schedule something.
