Her parents are getting a divorce. And she suspects her best friend\, Cat\, may have known the reason for it long before she did. Now Harper and her mom are starting over in a cramped house\, in a new town\, where everything feels unfamiliar\, including the riding barn next door. Harper’s never been around horses before. And no\, she does not want to learn to ride. Then with no warning\, a truck dumps a starved and neglected horse right in Harper’s yard. She has no idea what to do with a live horse let alone a nearly dead one. But one look at the horse’s huge eyes and his skinny body\, and something inside Harper unlocks. The horse is named Phoenix\, she decides. And she will not give up on him. Neither\, it turns out\, will Phoenix give up on her. She doesn’t know it yet\, but this is Harper’s first step—toward new friends\, new challenges\, new adventures. Toward riding. \nAbout the Author:  \nKimberly Brubaker Bradley grew up horse-obsessed in a tragically non-horsey place and family. When she was eighteen and went to college\, she took the reins in her own hands and hasn’t stopped riding since. Kim foxhunted\, competed at mid-amateur levels of  eventing\, and was the longtime “Boss Mare” of the Holston Pony Club for kids in her Tennessee hometown—a big part of her inspiration for this series—all while she was busy writing Newbery Honor-winning novels like The War That Saved My Life and Fighting Words. Kim is a fierce advocate for horses and the value of the human-horse connection. This is the horse-kid series of her heart.

SUMMARY:Two Way Street Coffee House Presents Rory Makem
DESCRIPTION:Two Way Street Coffee House is Chicagoland’s most beloved folk and acoustic music venue\, presenting weekly concerts and community events for over 55 years!  The show starts at 8pm (CT) and the doors open at 7:30pm. (Suggested donation $10\, cash or Paypal).  We will also host this concert virtually.  You may access the livestream on www.twowaystreet.org\, on our Facebook page\, or on our YouTube channel. \nOn Friday\, March 6\, 2026 Two Way Street Coffee House Friday Night Concert Series presents Rory Makem. \nA seasoned performer with over 35 years on the road\, Rory has toured extensively with The Makem Brothers\, and the Makem and Spain Brothers and for 17 years played guitar with his father\, Tommy Makem. He has played sold-out venues\, festivals\, and theaters throughout the United States\, Canada\, England\, Scotland and Ireland. At his best on stage\, Rory captivates his audiences with charisma\, passion for the songs\, poetry\, history\, humor and skilled musicianship. \nThe love of song runs deep in the family. Continuing a legacy handed down from his Grandmother\, the legendary source singer Sarah Makem\, Rory pulls the songs of the worker\, the sailor\, the lovers\, the fighters and the land from the pages of history and breathes life into them. An adept interpreter of folk songs\, he masterfully accompanies himself on guitar\, banjo\, mandolin or bouzouki. \nNot limiting himself to the stage\, Rory has played on movie soundtracks including A Fool and His Money\, and The Lightkeeper. His compositions can be heard as the backdrop for PBS series as diverse as Tommy Tang’s Modern Thai Cuisine to It’s an Age Thing\, to Simply Painting. \nLearning from those that came before you is the essence of folk music and Rory has had the great honor to learn from the best. Of course there were the many years at his father’s side… absorbing the master at his craft. He has also recorded with some luminaries of modern folk music; Tom Paxton\, Noel Paul Stookey\, Bill Staines\, Eric Weissberg\, Roger McGuinn\, Dave Mallett\, Gordon Bok\, Jonathan Edwards\, Rick and Ron Shaw\, and Schooner Fare. \nThrough more than a quarter century of plying his craft\, Rory has established himself as one of the leading forces in the song tradition of Irish music… and so… the tradition continues. \nIf you can’t join us in person\, you can still tune in virtually to catch the show!  Make your donation HERE to Rory.  Visit www.twowaystreet.org for more information.

An orphan of the Black Death\, and an almost unnerving picture of innocence\, she tells Thomas that plague is only part of a larger cataclysm—that the fallen angels under Lucifer are rising in a second war on heaven\, and that the world of men has become their battleground. Is it delirium or is it faith? \nNow she has convinced the faithless Thomas to shepherd her across a depraved landscape to Avignon. There\, she tells Thomas\, she will fulfill her mission: to confront the evil that has devastated the earth\, and give him—blood-stained and wretched as he is—a chance at redemption he long thought lost. \nAs hell unleashes its wrath\, and as the true nature of the girl is revealed\, Thomas will find himself on a macabre battleground of angels and demons\, saints and the risen dead\, and in the midst of a desperate struggle for nothing less than the soul of man. \nMore about Nowhere Burning: \nNowhere Burning is a harrowing tale of survival that places the dark fairy tale of Peter Pan and the ruthless dangers of Lord of the Flies into the unforgiving maw of the Colorado Rockies. \n“Gripping and beautiful\, haunting and virtuously crafted…you won’t be able to stop reading.”—Virginia Feito\, author of Victorian Psycho \nSecrets in the flames. Answers in the ashes. \nRiley and her brother Oliver set off in the pitch-black night\, fleeing their troubled home. They are heading for Nowhere—an abandoned ranch\, once the playground of its former eccentric movie-star owner\, now a haven for runaways. \nWhat awaits could be the freedom they crave. \nBut this mysterious clan guards dark secrets\, and the scorched grounds hold the ghosts of the past. Riley quickly realizes that while she and Oliver may have escaped the devil they knew\, something darker lurks in the burnt shell of Nowhere. \nSomething which asks a terrible price for sanctuary… \nAlso by Catriona Ward:\nLooking Glass Sound\nSundial\nLittle Eve\nThe Last House on Needless Street \nAbout the Authors:\nChristopher Buehlman (he/him) is an author\, comedian\, and screenwriter from St. Petersburg\, Florida\, whose books include The Blacktongue Thief\, The Daughters’ War\, and Between Two Fires.
