SUMMARY:Tivoli Theatre - After Hours Film Society Presents Twinless
DESCRIPTION:CAST & CREW\nDirected by James Sweeney\nFeaturing Dylan O’Brien\, Lauren Graham & Arkira Chantaratananond\nRunning Time: 100 mins.\nRated R\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \nMOVIE REVIEW\nReviewed by Christy Lemire | RogerEbert.comThis is going to be a tricky one: How to tell you about how great “Twinless” is without giving away what makes it great? \nJust trust me when I say that it’s extremely clever and full of surprises\, and reinforces that writer\, director\, and co-star James Sweeney is a bold and refreshing filmmaker to watch. I’m not quite sure how he pulled this off\, because it could have gone so very wrong in so many ways. \nThis is Sweeney’s second feature\, following the 2019 rom-com “Straight Up\,” which earned him a Spirit Award nomination for Best First Screenplay. But while that film had a lively repartee and overanalytical characters who often said too much\, “Twinless” is about what people withhold\, what they’re afraid to say\, and the suspense that arises from that silence. \nSweeney and Dylan O’Brien co-star as Dennis and Roman\, two strangers who meet at a support group for twins who’ve lost a sibling. That alone provides a compelling premise. Such grief is so unusual and specific\, the only people who could understand it are those who’ve suffered through it themselves. These two extremely different young men quickly form an unlikely bond: They go grocery shopping\, share sandwiches\, wear matching Halloween costumes\, and generally fill the hole in each other’s lives that’s been left by their brothers’ demise. \nLong before Roman asks whether they’d be friends under ordinary circumstances—and Dennis lets the weight of that question hang in the air a little too long—we know what the answer is. Roman is a simple\, stoic guy with a muscular physique\, which makes his fits of rage even scarier. Dennis is reedy and queer\, with a quick\, self-deprecating sense of humor. Tragedy brought them together and is the force that binds them. \n“Twinless” initially features the gentle beats of a sweetly melancholy indie comedy. But Sweeney has darker and more complicated instincts on his mind\, both behind and in front of the camera. He’s getting at something deeper here about the all-consuming nature of loneliness\, and the extent to which people will go in their desperate need for companionship. \nThe film calls on O’Brien in particular to dig deep and show unexpected range. He’s reticent and tormented as Roman\, but in a flashback\, he also plays Roman’s twin brother\, Rocky\, who’s the complete opposite: flirty\, charismatic\, and comfortable in his own skin as an openly gay man. If you only know O’Brien from “The Maze Runner” movies and the odd Taylor Swift music video\, you’re in for not one but two distinct and thrilling performances. \nMeanwhile\, Sweeney\, as a co-star\, has a delightful way with an understated one-liner. Dennis seems to be in constant conflict with himself over whether to say what he’s thinking out loud\, which results in some hilariously awkward moments as well as genuine tension. The insecurity that lurks underneath\, though\, is the source of the film’s increasing drama. \nSweeney\, as screenwriter\, gives us enough credit as an audience to create characters who do mean and messy things – to make likable people unlikable\, and hope that we’ll stick with them. This is especially true when Roman starts dating Marcie (Aisling Franciosi)\, the perky receptionist at Dennis’ office\, which changes the dynamic between all three people. Marcie is another great example of Sweeney’s ability to craft characters who are more complex than they initially seem; she comes off as sunny and accommodating\, but eventually gets the chance to show some unexpected spine. And in a brief role as Roman and Rocky’s mother\, Lauren Graham provides warmth and grounding. \nSweeney\, as director\, favors stylistic flourishes that enhance the storytelling rather than distract from it. These include long tracking shots\, thoughtful use of split screen\, and the inspired choice of the colorful Hopscotch immersive art experience in Portland for a moment of high drama. The costume design from Erin Aldridge Orr emphasizes the duality of these characters. And the score\, composed by frequent Bong Joon-ho collaborator Jung Jae-il (“Parasite\,” “Squid Game”)\, adds an intriguing\, inquisitive quality that draws us in further. \nAll these elements come together with a delicate tonal balance that would have been difficult even for veteran filmmakers to achieve. See “Twinless” with your other half\, whoever they may be. He’s worked with hard-core line cooks and celebrity chefs\, suffered embarrassing setbacks\, and won Michelin stars. Today his Boka Group is one of the most successful restaurant companies in the world. \nBut Boehm’s path was a complicated one. A turbulent family life and a shocking revelation about his father drove him out into the world in search of a home. He found one in restaurants. Amidst other gifted and damaged people\, he discovered the magic of hospitality and the thrill of a dining room on the edge of chaos. \nThe Bottomless Cup is Boehm’s vibrant\, funny and frank account of a life in and out of restaurants. This is a memoir about dropping out and finding your place\, about opening nights and what comes after\, about chefs\, partners\, guests\, and critics. The Bottomless Cup is a story of ambition and adrenaline\, of reaching remarkable highs and reckoning with the costs. \nAbout the Author:\nKevin Boehm is cofounder of the Boka Group and winner of the James Beard Award for Outstanding Restaurateur in 2019. He has opened 40 restaurants over the last 30 years\, including Girl & the Goat\, Swift & Sons\, Momotaro\, GT Prime\, Alla Vita\, Duck Duck Goat\, Little Goat\, GT Fish & Oyster\, Cira\, Lazy Bird\, Cabra\, Girl & The Goat Los Angeles\, and Laser Wolf Brooklyn\, among others. Her outbursts are infamous at the House of Industry\, the school for children who can wield radiance\, an electricity-like magic. She’s tried to follow the rules\, but her fiery nature is at odds with the core tenet of the House: Never form attachments. If she is meant to feel nothing\, why are her emotions so volatile? \nNo one is surprised when\, upon graduation\, Josephine is banished from the city to a remote Mission. In Frostbrook\, she must work under standoffish Julian\, the former golden boy of the House of Industry who seems determined to watch her fail. And then there’s Ezra\, the flirtatious stranger who’s a little too curious about how the Mission operates. \nBut there are bigger problems than Julian and Ezra’s secrets. A deadly disease is spreading across the countryside\, and in Frostbrook\, not everyone is eager to embrace Progress. As Josephine questions the system that raised her—and gives in to desire she’s been taught to suppress—she must decide what she’s willing to sacrifice to expose not just corruption within the House\, but the devastating truth about the radiance in her core. \nAn epic and romantic fantasy that reimagines the War of the Currents\, A Wild Radiance explodes with the same queer chaotic tension\, magical industrialization\, and class revolution themes that made Arcane a #1 Netflix sensation. \nPerfect for readers who love Queerplatonic and Poly Relationships\, Anti-Capitalism\, Hurt/Comfort\, Sunshine/Grump/Gremlin Dynamics\, Messy Exes\, and Fantasy Road Trips! \nAbout the Author:\nMaria Ingrande Mora (they/she) is the acclaimed author of Fragile Remedy\, a Junior Library Guild Gold Standard Selection\, Ranger Academy\, the first Power Rangers comic to feature a nonbinary main character\, and The Immeasurable Depth of You\, Amelia Elizabeth Walden Award finalist\, which earned three starred reviews\, with Kirkus calling it “[r]aw and compassionate.” Their explosive new YA fantasy\, A Wild Radiance\, reimagines the War of the Currents in a queernormative\, magical world. Maria lives in St. Petersburg\, Florida with their two teenagers and three cats. \n  \nAbout the Conversation Partner:\nAlex Crespo writes about queer love\, magic\, and all the ways they intersect. His books include Saint Juniper’s Folly and A Feast for the Eyes. When not writing\, you can find him making art or daydreaming about Mothman. SUMMARY:Two Way Street Coffee House Presents Jim Bizer
DESCRIPTION:Two Way Street Coffee House is Chicagoland’s most beloved folk and acoustic music venue\, presenting weekly concerts and community events for over 50 years!  The show starts at 8pm (CT) and the doors open at 7:30pm. Suggested donation $10 (Cash or Paypal at door).  We will also host this concert virtually.  You may access the livestream on www.twowaystreet.org\, on our Facebook page\, or on our YouTube channel. \nOn Friday\, January 30\, 2026 Two Way Street Coffee House Friday Night Concert Series presents Jim Bizer. \nGigging since age 14 and a career musician all of his adult life\, Jim’s been around the musical block. He’s an accomplished musician\, with a comfortable\, deep groove and a restless imagination. His songs are a unique blend of humor\, catchy melodies\, and his own personal view of the essential craziness of being human. \nGrowing up in Detroit\, Jim was exposed to (and fascinated by) a widely varied spectrum of music. Educated on French horn\, self-taught on guitar and piano\, he studied music theory at the University of Michigan before embarking on an equally varied music career: “cover” musician\, session player\, composer for radio spots and a weekly television series. A songwriter since his early teens\, it took some time before Jim made this his primary focus – once he did\, his songs quickly earned accolades: he’s been a winner or finalist in numerous national songwriting competitions. \nJim has two solo CDs to his credit: “Closer To The Surface”\, twelve songs of love\, life\, insanity and natural disasters; and “Connected”\, with another dozen of Jim’s remarkable songs\, including the award-winning “We Are All Connected”. \nIn addition to his solo career\, Jim creates and performs with his longtime friend and collaborator\, Jan Krist. Together\, they have produced two recordings: “Influence”and “Too”. Both Jim & Jan are part of The Yellow Room Gang\, a songwriters’ collective featuring several well-known Michigan performers. Four Yellow Room Gang CDs\, with songs from all the members\, are now available. \nAnd he doesn’t stop there – Jim\, Jan and Jan’s husband Alan have joined forces with the popular roots duo Annie & Rod Capps to form the powerhouse band Diamonds in the Rust.  Jim is also a pivotal member of the rollicking folk/roots-rock/slightly bluegrassy/party gospel band Floyd King & the Bushwackers. And he’s a sideman for various other Detroit area musical aggregations. In addition to his performing career\, he leads songwriting and guitar workshops and hosts MAMA’s Coffeehouse\, a monthly acoustic music concert series in suburban Detroit. \nIf you can’t join us in person\, you can still tune in virtually to catch the show!  Make your donation HERE to Jim Bizer.  Visit www.twowaystreet.org for more information.
