SUMMARY:Two Way Street Coffee House - Cooler By The Lake and Victoria Storm
DESCRIPTION:Two Way Street Coffee House is Chicagoland’s most beloved folk and acoustic music venue\, presenting weekly concerts and community events for over 50 years!  The show starts at 8pm (CT) and the doors open at 7:30pm. (Suggested donation $10).  We will also host this concert virtually.  You may access the livestream on www.twowaystreet.org\, on our Facebook page or on our YouTube channel. \nOn Friday\, October 3\, 2025 Two Way Street Coffee House Friday Night Concert Series presents Cooler By the Lake and Victoria Storm as part of our Local Artist Showcase. \nCooler by the Lake \nCooler by the Lake is an acoustic folk band from Chicago whose sound is as refreshing as a cool breeze on a summer night. Forged in the near west suburbs\, the band began as a group of friends playing at local festivals\, farmers markets\, and community benefits\, and quickly grew into a spirited ensemble. \nFeaturing the voices\, flute\, fiddle\, guitars\, and upright bass of Stephanie Kay\, Stephanie Rath\, Betsy Backes\, Jean Bacom\, and Terrence Keleher\, Cooler by the Lake blends thoughtful harmonies and acoustic arrangements that feel like a front porch singalong. Each member brings a unique artistry and style\, creating music that is both heartfelt and uplifting. \nWith a shared passion for their community\, the band often lends its music to support local nonprofits\, celebrating both the folk tradition and the spirit of Chicago. \nVictoria Storm \nA Chicago-based singer-songwriter\, Victoria Storm weaves intricate stories of love\, loss\, and human connection into every note. With influences ranging from Jane Siberry to Brandi Carlile\, her sound captures the heart and soul of personal experiences\, delivered through haunting melodies and thoughtful lyricism. \nHer third EP\, released in 2025\, delves deep into themes of emotional resilience\, sisterhood\, and the passage of time. The title track\, “Butterfly Wings\,” released as a single in 2021\, explores the bonds of friendship in the face of depression. “This Old House\,” another powerful single from the EP\, touches on the intersection of long-term love and grief. November 2024 brought us “A Place in This World” – a raw\, introspective look at empty nesting and witnessing the struggle towards adulthood. “Tomorrow’s Already Now” is a poignant reflection on the restlessness of insomnia. The EP closes with – “The Wind Knows My Name” – a heartfelt cover of Fairground Attraction’s1980s ballad\, featuring beloved Chicago pianist Bradley Williams. \nEach song on the EP embodies Victoria’s masterful ability to craft relatable narratives that resonate with listeners across generations. \nIf you can’t join us in person\, you can still tune in virtually to catch the show! Make your donation HERE to Cooler By The Lake and Victoria Storm.  Visit www.twowaystreet.org for more information.

SUMMARY:Fair Game - Magic the Gathering - Friendly Neighborhood Draft
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a Friendly Neighborhood Draft \nMagic Presents: Friendly Neighborhood Draft is a special in-store Magic event series\, running through November 13\, 2025. It spotlights the Pick-Two Draft format—a streamlined\, four-player drafting experience ideal for small groups and casual play. This event series features the Magic: The Gathering | Marvel’s Spider-Man set and is great for introducing players to the format while making drafting fast\, friendly\, and accessible. \nUnlike traditional eight-player drafts\, Pick-Two Drafts allow each player to select two cards per pick\, reducing the number of participants needed while maintaining strategic depth and fun. Games are played in pods with a minimum of four players. If more players join in the pods will be formed as follows: \n\n3–7 players: 1 pod\n8–11 players: 2 pods\n12–15 players: 3 pods\nEtc.\n\n \nPlayers then compete in a two round Swiss tournament. The undefeated (2–0) player(s) from each pod will receive the event promo card “Ultimate Green Goblin” (while supplies last). \nDon’t miss out on your chance to join us for this exciting new way to draft with friends. Reserve a seat today! \n\n\n\n\n\n  \n

Medina as part of our Heritage Matinee Series. \nMark Dvorak \nMark Dvorak is a modern-day troubadour who has never stopped performing\, writing and recording. He has been called “a folk singer’s folk singer” with “an encyclopedic knowledge of traditional songs.” His original songs “wondrous” and “profound.” \nThough Mark often appears in theaters and on festival stages\, he is also at home in a more intimate setting.  His concerts are a mix of the familiar and the new\, traditional folk and standards from the Great American Songbook. He plays authentic country blues guitar and picks great old-time banjo. Mark enjoys involving his audiences in sing-along songs\, just like The Weavers used to do\, and mixes in his own infectious and well-crafted originals. \nAshley & Simpson \nComprised of Jennifer Ashley and Joel Simpson\, Ashley & Simpson are quickly becoming folk scene favorites. This folk duo blends traditional songs and instrumentation along with beautiful vocal harmonies reminiscent of famous duos such as Ian & Silvia and The Everly Brothers. With their sophomore release “Off To Here Land\,” they have pushed the art of folk to a new sound with an all traditional track list that will delight fans new and old.  Both bringing a classical perspective to their duo\, Jennifer Ashley & Joel Simpson have reached a new level with incorporating elements of jazz\, popular music and other modern styles in their arrangements. \nGeorge Mattson Trio \nGeorge Mattson has been a performer at Two Way Street Coffee House and a fixture in the local folk community for many years. A member of Plank Road Folk Music Society and the Plank Road String Band\, George is our long time leader of the Plank Road and Two Way Street co-sponsored Saturday Sing Arounds and Song Circles. We are thrilled to have the George Mattson Trio once again on the Two Way Street Stage! Performing old time and classic country\, swing\, jazz\, blues\, honkytonk\, George Mattson accompanies his big\, rich voice on guitar and banjo. Featuring Tommy Re on fiddle\, and Mike Hazdra on vocals and bass. \nLisa P. Medina \nLisa is a contemporary folk singer-songwriter with a flavorful hint of Latin rhythm and spice. Lisa’s performance history includes: church choir\, theater kid\, solo singer-songwriter\, vocals and guitar in various duos and bands\, and as a vocalist with a Grammy-nominated Latin jazz big band. Over the years Lisa sang on renowned stages\, most notably at the Petrillo Bandshell for the Chicago Jazz Festival\, Park West\, the Old Town School Folk & Roots Festival\, the Adler Planetarium\, and at Wrigley Field singing the National Anthem for Cubs games. \nUpon having children\, Lisa’s paid gigs transformed into exclusive cribside lullabies and toddler storytimes. This season as a new mom – full of wonder and sometimes chaos – left her without the time or energy for writing songs. After a decade flew by\, Lisa thought perhaps she had forgotten how. Finally\, when the pandemic hit in 2020\, isolation at home with her family\, a new puppy\, and an old piano stirred her creative spirit. Lisa and her little ones filled their time playing music together. Amid the devastating events in her community and the world\, her children’s innocent laughter and musical curiosity became her muse. Lisa started crafting stories and dreams into powerful songs that resonate with listeners of all ages. These songs\, written at a time of creative reawakening\, form the heart and the backbone of Lisa’s latest project: her first studio album\, which was released in May 2024. \nWe will also host this concert virtually.  You may access the livestream on www.twowaystreet.org\, on our Facebook page\, or on our YouTube channel.  All donations will support the Two Way Street Coffee House. \n

SUMMARY:Tivoli Theatre - After Hours Film Society Presents Architecton
DESCRIPTION:CAST & CREW\nDirected by Eva Victor\nFeaturing Eva Victor\, Naomi Ackie\, Louis Cancelmi\nRated R\nRuntime: 103 mins.\n\n\n\n\n\n \nMOVIE REVIEW\nReviewed by Guy Lodge | Variety“We need a new idea of beauty\,” says Michele De Lucchi\, the Italian architect who talks us through certain stretches of “Architecton\,” a singularly imposing and sonorous new documentary from Russian non-fiction auteur Victor Kossakovsky. His argument is that the earth can no longer sustain the kind of hefty architectural grandeur\, built from the fabric of the Earth itself\, that we’ve asthetically prized for centuries\, and nor can the cycle of more disposable concrete construction continue without devastating environmental impact. It’s a sound point\, even as Kossakovsky’s film trades in entirely classic ideas of beauty to jaw-dropping effect. Whether gazing in rapt widescreen across wondrous ancient structures\, ruined recent cityscapes or the oceanic shift and shake of a stone quarry in action\, this is blatantly dazzling\, epic-scale filmmaking that nonetheless invites viewers to consider the implications of our awe. \nWhat is it about man-made landmarks that moves us: the very effort of their creation\, or the way they reshape the world immediately around them? Should architecture seek first to beautify its site or to efficiently serve its inhabitants\, and which of those objectives is more ecologically ideal? These are big\, knotty questions\, and “Architecton” — wordless outside of De Lucchi’s occasional narration — doesn’t impose any answers on its audience. Instead\, Kossakovsky gives us ample space to absorb his repeatedly stunning images at a gradual\, mesmeric pace\, and to sit with our response to them as initial startlement unfolds into more lateral thought. It should go without saying that this doc\, co-financed by A24 and premiering in Berlin’s main competition\, is not suited to laptop screens. Potential distributors would do well to position it as unusual event viewing. \nIn feeling and form\, this is closer to 2018’s “Aquarela” — Kossakovsky’s similarly spectacular sensory essay on water in its panoply of earthly forms — than it is to his last\, Neon-backed feature “Gunda\,” a more intimate\, nominally more narrative-based study of a pig’s maternal journey on a Norwegian farmyard. (Kossakovsky\, meanwhile\, considers “Architecton” the concluding third of a trilogy with “Aquarela” and his 2011 antipodal travelogue “¡Vivan las Antipodas!”) The throughline between all these works\, however\, is a concern with man’s disruptions of the natural world for his own purposes\, influencing not only surrounding ecosystems but subsequent generations of his own kind.  “We don’t just design buildings\,” De Lucchi observes as he reflects on a current construction industry in flux. “We design the behavior of people.” \nThose designs can be fragile\, however\, as shown in the film’s haunting opening images of Ukranian apartment blocks torn craggily open by Russian bombing\, the camera tracking down a cross-section of kitchens now exposed to the elements\, depopulated and turned inside out: an efficient\, communal design for life that couldn’t withstand other men’s more selfish impositions on the landscape. Elsewhere\, we fly over high-rises in Turkey riven not by human forces but the 2023 earthquakes. The demolition is\, either way\, devastating and premature\, but these buildings\, squarely unadorned and unlovely\, were never meant to last forever — De Lucchi estimates the average lifespan of such modern concrete structures at just 40 years. \nIn pointed contrast\, we cut to the ancient ruins of Baalbek in Lebanon\, where the architect gazes upon a pair of stone megaliths so vast\, so positively uncanny in their scale and the precision of their shaping\, that they hardly seem man-made\, as if lowered on the land by a divine entity for our eternal astonishment. They literally couldn’t be made or moved today\, and yet they were. As his camera solemnly surveys them\, Kossakovsky invites us to wonder what we’ve lost in our inability to forge such monuments\, or if the land has gained something back. For aesthetic classicists of the “they don’t make ’em like they used to” persuasion\, “Architecton” feeds such ideas to a point\, before tacitly underlining the hubris of such long-gone architects. Should we ever have made ’em like that at all? \nThe stone work of the 21st century is smaller and more processed\, as huge reserves of natural rock are tamed and chipped by man and machinery into industralized quarries of daunting\, many-tiered proportions. But Kossakovsky finds a kind of otherworldly spectacle in these too. The film’s most hypnotic sequences\, luxuriating over several minutes of screen time\, observe in painstaking slow-motion the fall and flow of stone following calculated explosions\, revealed — via Kossakovsky’s own crisp\, elegant cuts — in ever wider shot until the mineral tumble takes on the appearance of water in frothy\, turbulent motion. The difference is that this roiling of the elements is choreographed by humans taking ownership of the environment\, rather like the fir trees felled in woodland adjacent to the quarry. But we can still marvel at this terrible control. \nOther passages of the film think smaller: There’s a witty\, recurring observation of a modest domestic project by De Lucchi\, as he recruits a team of bemused laborers to lay out a large\, stone-edged circle in the rambling gardens of his Italian home. It scarcely counts as architecture\, but the intention behind it is high-minded: No man will enter the grassy interior of the circle\, he dictates\, as overgrowing nature and his snuffling dogs are permitted to colonize this hitherto domestic space as they will. The architect admits to feeling some shame over the transient concrete structures he has imposed on already overcrowded cityscapes\, and aims to do some penance by carving out such unobstructed negative spaces. \nBut there’s an inescapable irony in man having to build the unbuilt\, in having to dictate what designated areas the earth can take back. There is no escaping our own mastery\, our own determination of what is beautiful and useful. A man-made work that is very much both of those things\, “Architecton” frustratedly awaits a new world order\, or at least a new blueprint. \n\n\nDISCUSSION FOLLOWS EVERY FILM!\n$7.00 Members | $11.00 Non-Members\nTIVOLI THEATRE\n5021 Highland Avenue  |  Downers Grove\, IL\n630-968-0219 |  classiccinemas.com\nWe apologize—Movie Pass cannot be used for AHFS programs
