SUMMARY:Pinecone Cottage Tea House - Mayan Xcalak Beach Party Afternoon Tea
DESCRIPTION:There is at least one beach town that has stayed small in Mexico\, but you literally have to get off the beaten path to find it! Last Spring\, Paul and I drove one and a half hours south of Tulum and went off grid for a week\, in the simple fishing village of Xcalak. Xcalak is the most southern town in Mexico\, on the Mexican Caribbean coast just near Belize. We enjoyed the lack of resorts\, shopping and banks\, and enjoyed the ecotourism. We then returned to Tulum and took a hands on cooking class at Rivera’s Kitchen. In Lily’s home kitchen\, we explored traditional Mayan cuisine\, preparing everything from scratch and gaining a deeper appreciation for the region’s flavors. This late summer afternoon tea menu is inspired by our two weeks in this beautiful Caribbean area filled with colorful and delicious ingredients. \n\nChef Pam \nAfternoon Tea Served by Reservation Only\nAge Requirement 13 yrs +\nThree Course Prix Fixe Afternoon Tea | 62\nGluten Free\, Dairy Free\, Vegetarian or Vegan Options | 67\nPrice Includes 20% Gratuity\nBYOB Wine or Beer | 10 per bottle \nRecommended Teas\nFeatured Tea – Refreshing Watermelon-Lychee\nBeverage – Golden Starfruit Iced Tea\nTeatail – Pear-Berry Kiss \nBeginnings\nMexican Salad with Potatoes in Green Sauce with Banana-Date Bread \nSavories and PineScones\nChicken Al Pastor Salad Tea Sandwich\nStuffed Poblano Pepper Tortilla Cup\nMayan Shrimp and Corn Salad Tea Sandwich\nBlack Bean and Artichoke Tostada\nCoconut-Almond-Orange PineScone with Almond Devon Crème and Orange Marmalade \nSweet Endings\nArroz con Leche\nCaramel Flan Cheesecake\nMexican Chocolate Poundcake with Mango and Berries \nPinecone Cottage Cancellation Policy\nPinecone Cottage is a small\, locally owned business\, and we truly value each of our guests. SUMMARY:Anderson's Bookshop - Chronically Curious Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Join us in Downers Grove for our Chronically Curious Book Club! Our next meeting will be held on Sunday\, August 2nd at 3:00 pm\, and we will be discussing Empire of AI: Dreams and Nightmares in Sam Altman’s OpenAI. \n\nThis will be a free event\, but we highly encourage the purchase of the monthly book from our store. Please note that the author will not be present at this event. \nMore about Empire of AI:   \nA New York Times Notable Book • Winner of the National Book Critics Circle Award for Nonfiction • A New York Times Bestseller • Named a Best Book of the Year by Smithsonian\, Scientific American\, and Elle • Winner of the Los Angeles Times Book Prize\, NYPL Helen Bernstein Award\, Whiting Award\, and Porchlight Business Book Award \n“A bestselling page-turner that has made waves not just in Silicon Valley but around the world . . . With Empire of AI\, Hao is fundamentally shaping many people’s perceptions and understanding of the company at the center of the AI revolution.” —TIME Magazine\, “TIME100 AI 2025” \n“Excellent and deeply reported.” —Tim Wu\, The New York Times \n“Startling and intensely researched . . . an essential account of how OpenAI and ChatGPT came to be and the catastrophic places they will likely take us.” —Vulture \nFrom a brilliant longtime AI insider with intimate access to the world of Sam Altman’s OpenAI from the beginning\, an eye-opening account of arguably the most fateful tech arms race in history\, reshaping the planet in real time\, from the cockpit of the company that is driving the frenzy \nWhen AI expert and investigative journalist Karen Hao first began covering OpenAI in 2019\, she thought they were the good guys. Founded as a nonprofit with safety enshrined as its core mission\, the organization was meant\, its leader Sam Altman told us\, to act as a check against more purely mercantile\, and potentially dangerous\, forces. What could go wrong? \nOver time\, Hao began to wrestle ever more deeply with that question. Increasingly\, she realized that the core truth of this massively disruptive sector is that its vision of success requires an almost unprecedented amount of resources: the “compute” power of high-end chips and the processing capacity to create massive large language models\, the sheer volume of data that needs to be amassed at scale\, the humans “cleaning up” that data for sweatshop wages throughout the Global South\, and a truly alarming spike in the usage of energy and water underlying it all. The truth is that we have entered a new and ominous age of empire: only a small handful of globally scaled companies can even enter the field of play. At the head of the pack with its ChatGPT breakthrough\, how would OpenAI resist such temptations? \nSpoiler alert: it didn’t. Armed with Microsoft’s billions\, OpenAI is setting a breakneck pace\, chased by a small group of the most valuable companies in human history—toward what end\, not even they can define. All this time\, Hao has maintained her deep sourcing within the company and the industry\, and so she was in intimate contact with the story that shocked the entire tech industry—Altman’s sudden firing and triumphant return. The behind-the-scenes story of what happened\, told here in full for the first time\, is revelatory of who the people controlling this technology really are. But this isn’t just the story of a single company\, however fascinating it is. The g forces pressing down on the people of OpenAI are deforming the judgment of everyone else too—as such forces do. Naked power finds the ideology to cloak itself; no one thinks they’re the bad guy. But in the meantime\, as Hao shows through intrepid reporting on the ground around the world\, the enormous wheels of extraction grind on. By drawing on the viewpoints of Silicon Valley engineers\, Kenyan data laborers\, and Chilean water activists\, Hao presents the fullest picture of AI and its impact we’ve seen to date\, alongside a trenchant analysis of where things are headed. An astonishing eyewitness view from both up in the command capsule of the new economy and down where the real suffering happens\, Empire of AI pierces the veil of the industry defining our era. \nAbout the Author:\nKaren Hao is an award-winning journalist covering the impacts of artificial intelligence on society. She writes for publications including The Atlantic and leads the Pulitzer Center’s AI Spotlight Series\, a program training thousands of journalists around the world on how to cover AI. She was formerly a reporter for the Wall Street Journal covering American and Chinese tech companies and a senior editor for AI at MIT Technology Review. Her work is regularly taught in universities and cited by governments. She has received numerous accolades for her coverage\, including an American Humanist Media Award and American Society of Magazine Editors NEXT Award for Journalists Under 30. She received her bachelor of science in mechanical engineering from MIT.

SUMMARY:Anderson's Bookshop - Francesca Cocchi
DESCRIPTION:Join Anderson’s Bookshop for an author event with Francesca Cocchi\, to celebrate the release of Have a Great Summer\, on Thursday\, August 6th at 6:00 pm in our Downers Grove store. Cocchi will be in conversation with book reviewer Rachel Bush.\n\nEvent Format \nWe will begin checking you in approximately 30 minutes before the start time. After a presentation and Q&A with the author\, the line will form in numbered order with the following guidelines: \n\nPosed photo with your camera taken by our staff\nThere is a limit of 2 books from home to be signed (unless otherwise stated)\nThere is a limit of 1 personalization (unless otherwise stated)\n\nAll events have open seating. The “Order Line Number” on your pdf ticket is your reserved place in the signing line. You will line up to meet the author based on that number. \nIf you cannot attend\, you must pick up your book (if included with ticket) at the hosting store within 30 days of the event.  We can ship that book to you for an additional charge of $9.99; please call the store to arrange that. \nPre-registration is required for this event because space is limited. \nMore about Have a Great Summer: \nSet against a vibrant Jersey Shore backdrop and bursting with summertime romance\, hometown nostalgia\, smart humor\, female friendship\, and millennial angst\, journalist Francesca Cocchi’s dual-timeline teenage-crush-to-adult-lovers debut is the perfect beach read for fans of Annabel Monaghan\, Carley Fortune\, and Emily Henry. \nIf time is supposed to heal all wounds\, Lina Mariano’s broken teenage heart never quite got the message—but 15 sunny\, sandy\, angsty Jersey Shore summers later\, she finds herself unexpectedly facing her old crush\, getting a new perspective—and maybe even a hopeful glimpse of the future . . . \nLina Mariano is stuck—in her hometown\, in her job\, and in the past. And after six years of writing up local weddings as a columnist for a popular lifestyle website\, she’s wholeheartedly sick of nuptials. Worse\, the next one on her list is none other than Sebastian Nikolaou’s. \nWorking high school summers with sweet\, handsome Sebastian at his mother’s iconic beach restaurant\, teenage Lina was totally wrapped up in the way he made her feel—until the night that everything changed. Even so\, she’s embarrassed to admit how often she still thinks of him\, and now\, comparing their present lives is wrenching. It will take a careful look at her younger self\, and some wisdom from the best friend who was there for it all\, to see that making her dreams come true is up to her alone—whether or not those dreams still include Sebastian . . . \nPoignant\, engaging\, and insightful\, Have a Great Summer is an ode to the confused teenager in all of us\, and a reminder of the blissful\, excruciating\, delicious days of summers gone by. \nAbout the Author:  \nFrancesca Cocchi is a writer and editor who has covered food\, commerce\, and other lifestyle subjects for national outlets\, including Food Network Magazine\, The Pioneer Woman Magazine\, and NBC’s TODAY. She holds a degree in English literature from Villanova University and attended New York University’s Summer Publishing Institute. A proud Jersey girl\, she grew up down the shore in Monmouth County and currently lives in Jersey City with her husband and their dog. Find her on Instagram @francescaa_nicolee and TikTok @francesca_cocchi. \nAbout the Conversation Partner: \nRachel Bush is a local teacher\, mom of two\, and a passionate reader. She reviews books of all genres as @RachelReadThese on Instagram and Goodreads\, but her favorites are thrillers\, romances\, and fantasy books. She loves to support independent bookstores and has enjoyed many author events through Anderson’s Bookshop!
