A flow of images ranging from vampires\, insects\, dinosaurs\, dodo birds\, work and romance. \nRobin has shared the stage with Dan Hicks\, Christine Lavin\, Junior Brown & Southern Culture on the Skids. SUMMARY:Two Way Street Coffee House - Heritage Matinee Series
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to the second season of the Heritage Matinee Series at the Two Way Street Coffee House!  We are thrilled to announce the continuation of this successful concert series at the Two Way Street Coffee House\, taking place on select Sunday afternoons in 2026.  In each concert\, Mark Dvorak and Ashley & Simpson will be joined by two local artists for a matinee concert\, all benefitting the Two Way Street Coffee House!  100% of free-will donations collected at each concert will support the Two Way Street Coffee House’s operation and programming.  It’s a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon\, and it’s a great way to support Two Way Street!  All shows will begin at 3pm (CT) and the doors will open at 2:30pm. \nOn June 28\, 2026 the Two Way Street Coffee House is pleased to present Mark Dvorak\, Ashley & Simpson\, Merv Collins\, and Jim Gary as part of our Heritage Matinee Series. \nMark Dvorak \nMark Dvorak is a modern-day troubadour who has never stopped performing\, writing and recording. He has been called “a folk singer’s folk singer” with “an encyclopedic knowledge of traditional songs.” His original songs “wondrous” and “profound.” \nThough Mark often appears in theaters and on festival stages\, he is also at home in a more intimate setting.  His concerts are a mix of the familiar and the new\, traditional folk and standards from the Great American Songbook. He plays authentic country blues guitar and picks great old-time banjo. Mark enjoys involving his audiences in sing-along songs\, just like The Weavers used to do\, and mixes in his own infectious and well-crafted originals. \nAshley & Simpson \nComprised of Jennifer Ashley and Joel Simpson\, Ashley & Simpson are quickly becoming folk scene favorites. This folk duo blends traditional songs and instrumentation along with beautiful vocal harmonies reminiscent of famous duos such as Ian & Silvia and The Everly Brothers. With their sophomore release “Off To Here Land\,” they have pushed the art of folk to a new sound with an all traditional track list that will delight fans new and old.  Both bringing a classical perspective to their duo\, Jennifer Ashley & Joel Simpson have reached a new level with incorporating elements of jazz\, popular music and other modern styles in their arrangements. \nJim Gary \nFrom the Kerrville Folk Festival “New Folk” stage to Nashville’s Bluebird Café’s Sunday Writers’ Night to the here and now\, Jim Gary has been delighting audiences with his charming wit\, “very solid” songwriting (Kevin’s Celtic & Folk Music CD Reviews) and “one of the warmest and richest voices on the local scene” (Maple Street Chapel Concert Series). \nJim Gary grew up is southeastern Michigan listening to all the great sounds of the ‘60s – Motown\, Beatles and all those great Jimmy Webb songs. Picking up a guitar at age 14\, he started learning chords and moved on to fingerpicking the songs of John Denver\, Jim Croce\, Harry Chapin\, James Taylor and Gordon Lightfoot. During this time (as well as through high school)\, Jim was writing songs – dozens of them with some “keepers” showing up along the way. \nSince then\, Jim Gary has performed around the Midwest opening for Carrie Newcomer (Wisconsin Singer Songwriter Series)\, Hot Soup (Lake County Folk Club)\, Anne Hills (Maple Street Chapel)\, and Josh White\, Jr. (The Abbey Pub).  Jim opened the annual Christmas Benefit at WSSS with Willy Porter and Michael Johnson.  Jim has also shared the stage with Tricia Alexander\, James Durst\, and Jack Hamilton. All along\, Jim has been writing hundreds of songs (more and more “keepers”) with “My Main Man” receiving an Honorable Mention from Just Plain Folks – an internet community of over 40\,000 musicians and writers. \nJim’s first full-length CD “Midnight Muse” came in 1996 (produced and engineered by Victor Sanders at Lakeside Media in Chicago). “Midnight Muse” is a “delightful collection of songs” (Bob Janis\, WDCB’s “Folk Festival”) with a dozen original songs ranging from folk ballads to the uptempo full band “Go with the Flow” and “Winds of Fortune” to straight-up country “Mama’s Cheatin’” to a light jazz showtune-ish “Girl in the Gossamer Gown”. \nJim Gary lives in the Chicago area\, has recorded a CD of Michael Smith songs (“I Wanna Be Like Mike”) and continues to write and perform. Jim released a 2nd CD of original music\, Big Door… Little Wonder in 2014\, and that same year placed 3rd in the Great River Folk Festival’s Songwriting and Performance Contest in LaCrosse\, Wisconsin. \nMerv Collins\nBased in Algonquin\, Merv Collins is a captivating instrumental performer whose music blends the elegance of fingerstyle guitar with the expansive textures of synthesizers. His signature sound—rooted in classical technique and infused with rock sensibility—creates an immersive listening experience that consistently leaves audiences spellbound. \nMerv’s passion for performance was sparked at an early age after watching The Beatles on The Ed Sullivan Show—a moment that set him on a lifelong musical journey. His artistry reflects the influence of renowned guitar masters such as Chet Atkins\, Muriel Anderson\, Tommy Emmanuel\, and Richard Smith\, alongside the progressive innovation of bands like Emerson Lake & Palmer and Yes. \nListeners often describe Merv’s music as relaxing\, original\, and intriguingly complex—a seamless blend of melody\, technique\, and atmosphere. He has released three full-length recordings\, including his widely enjoyed 2011 album Fingers and Strings\, and continues to develop new material that pushes his creative boundaries. \nWhen he’s not composing or performing\, Merv enjoys films\, long drives\, and taking in live music throughout the Chicagoland area—continually drawing inspiration from the vibrant musical community around him. \nWe will also host this concert virtually.  You may access the livestream on www.twowaystreet.org\, on our Facebook page\, or on our YouTube channel.  All donations will support the Two Way Street Coffee House. Katouh will be in conversation with author Shifa Saltagi Safadi.\n\nEvent Format \nWe will begin checking you in approximately 30 minutes before the start time. After a presentation and Q&A with the author\, the line will form in numbered order with the following guidelines: \n\nPosed photo with your camera taken by our staff\nThere is a limit of 2 books from home to be signed (unless otherwise stated)\nThere is a limit of 1 personalization (unless otherwise stated)\n\n  \nAll events have open seating. The “Order Line Number” on your pdf ticket is your reserved place in the signing line. You will line up to meet the author based on that number. \nIf you cannot attend\, you must pick up your book (if included with ticket) at the hosting store within 30 days of the event.  We can ship that book to you for an additional charge of $9.99; please call the store to arrange that. \nPre-registration is required for this event because space is limited. \nMore about The Ocean Would Paint Me Blue: \nFrom the celebrated author of As Long as the Lemon Trees Grow comes a poignant novel about a Syrian American girl who uses a magical sketchbook to turn her grief into art\, painting miraculous murals of her mother’s life in Syria. \nSeventeen-year-old Jihad Dabbagh has always seen life with a heightened sense for colors\, one of many magical blessings the women in her family possess. But Jihad’s gift changes depending on her mood. When depression sets in\, the world is a colorless oasis\, and in the wake of her mother’s sudden death\, the world has become a permanent shade of grey. \nBroken by tragedy\, Jihad’s family doesn’t believe her color loss. Her father sends her to the elite Braxton Academy to finish her senior year. There\, Jihad’s name and hijab put a target on her back. Her haven comes in the form of an old sketchbook carved from a tree in her hometown in Syria—a country she only knew through her mother’s stories. Jihad hasn’t picked up a brush in over a year\, but finds herself channeling the colors of her hurt\, pain\, and grief as she paints the story of her mother’s journey in Syria. \nWhen graffiti of that same mural starts magically popping up all over New York\, her art goes viral and the world takes notice\, the threat of legal consequences is imminent. To reclaim her voice\, Jihad will have to paint a new future for herself and Braxton\, guided by the resilience of her mother’s story. \nAbout the Author:\nZoulfa Katouh is the award-winning and bestselling author of the novel As Long as the Lemon Trees Grow and The Ocean Would Paint Me Blue. Her books have been translated into over twenty-five languages and As Long as the Lemon Trees Grow was a Governor General’s Award finalist and a Yoto Carnegie Medal nominee. Zoulfa holds a degree in pharmacy and a master’s in Drug Sciences. She resides in Switzerland where she lives as a Studio Ghibli protagonist who is surrounded by a never-ending stack of books that keeps growing. \n  \nAbout the Conversation Partner:\nShifa Saltagi Safadi is the National Book Award winning author of Kareem Between\, the Amina Banana series\, and several picture books\, including The Gift of Eid. She has a bachelor’s degree in English literature\, is a former ELA teacher\, and is passionate about spreading a love of reading through storytimes and school visits. Shifa was born in Syria and immigrated to the US with her parents as a young girl. She lives near Chicago with her husband and four children. \nFind her on Instagram @shifasaltagisafadi

SUMMARY:Anderson's Bookshop - Educator Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our Educator Book Club! Our next in-person meeting will be held on Tuesday\, June 30th at 4:30 pm\, and we will be discussing My Brother Oliver by R.L. Toalson. This will be a free event\, but we highly encourage the purchase of the monthly book from our store.  Please note that the author will not be present at this event. \n\nMore about My Brother Oliver:   \nThree starred reviews!\nA “gut-wrenching and unforgettable” (Publishers Weekly\, starred review) novel in verse by about a boy struggling with guilt as his family reels from the fallout of his older brother’s extreme depression and tries to hold onto hope.\nMy brother’s not here.\nMy brother’s not here.\nMy brother’s not here.\nAnd it’s all\nbecause of\nme. \nBrooks loves and adores his older brother\, Oliver. That’s why it was so hard—practically impossible\, really—for him to have done what he did and told his parents about what Oliver wanted to do. \nNow Oliver has been sent away. He’s miserable\, and Brooks’s family is falling apart. His mom and dad are sad and scared\, and it seems like nothing will ever be okay again. Maybe things would be better if Brooks had just kept his mouth shut. Can he and his family find the hope they need to keep going? \nAbout the Author:\nR.L. Toalson grew up running wild through corn rows and cow-grazing fields and recording true and wildly exaggerated false tales to entertain her friends\, family members\, and anyone who would listen. She still runs (literally) wild through the streets of her city and spends most of her days recording true (if a little exaggerated) and false tales to entertain anyone who will listen. She lives in San Antonio\, Texas\, with her one brilliant husband\, six delightful children\, and two arrogant cats. She’s the author of The Colors of the Rain\, which won the Arnold Adoff Poetry Honor Award for New Voices in 2020; The Woods\, which received a starred review from Booklist; and the highly acclaimed The First Magnificent Summer.
