Two Way Street Coffee House – 5th Saturdays with Spencer & Rains

Welcome to 5th Saturdays at the Two Way Street Coffee House! Saturdays are special! An extra Saturday in a month comes around only a few times a year, so we decided to commemorate each one with a special event. 5th Saturdays in 2024 occur in March, June, August and November.
For our August event, Two Way Street Coffee House, in partnership with the Plank Road Folk Music Society, is pleased to present an Old Time Fiddle & Guitar with Spencer & Rains on August 31, 2024, from 2-4pm CT.
This event will be in-person attendance only. The admission price is $25 per participant and will be limited to 25 in-person attendees.
The registration deadline is August 26, 2024.
OLD-TIME FIDDLE & GUITAR WORKSHOP
Acclaimed fiddlers Tricia Spencer and Howard Rains will be teaching a workshop on old-time fiddle and back-up guitar. This workshop will show how these two instruments come together to create traditional American fiddle music. Tricia will teach the fiddlers and Howard will teach the guitar players and we will all play what we’ve learned together. There will also be in-depth discussion of different regional styles of fiddling and back-up.
Workshop Highlights:
- Fiddle Techniques with Tricia Spencer: Tricia will teach fiddling techniques passed down through generations, focusing on the chordal approach her grandmother, Iona Spencer, taught her. This method prioritizes seconding (chordal accompaniment) first, helping fiddlers improve their bowing, intonation, and tune learning by using chord shapes.
- Guitar Rhythms with Howard Rains: Howard will provide a tutorial on rhythm accompaniments that harmonize with the tunes Tricia presents.
Additional Details:
- The workshop is based on Tricia’s book, “The Fiddle Garden,” though the book is not required.
- All techniques will be taught by ear.
- Participants should bring a recording device, paper, and pen for notes.
- Suitable for all levels of musicianship.
- While rooted in old-time music, the lessons are applicable to all music styles.
