Michaelmas Afternoon Tea at Pinecone Cottage Tea House

September 25, 2021 @ 2:00 pm - September 26, 2021 @ 5:00 pm

Once again Autumn is here. The harvest is ready, and on September 29th, the fall feast, St. Michael’s Day or Michaelmas is celebrated marking the end of the harvest in most western European countries. It is enjoyed with autumnal vegetables and fruits, breads, roasts and most notably blackberries. Traditionally, Michaelmas was the last day to harvest blackberries before the first frost. The legend has it that after the Archangel Michael triumphantly defeated the devilish dragon and thrust him out of Heaven, the dragon fell sorely to the earth into a blackberry bush. Unamused and enraged the fiendish dragon spat on the bush and cursed it, making the blackberries bitter to the taste. Due to the curse, it is believed that any blackberries on a bush after Michaelmas belonged to the devil himself, so it was almost daft to pick the nefarious berries after that date. At Pinecone Cottage, we are delighted to share in this harvest feast and bring you a Michaelmas Afternoon Tea, complete with harvest blackberries – ripe, sweet, and devil free!
